About Ginkgos Ginkgo biloba is the sole survivor of a group of trees which grew on this planet over 200 million years ago and it has changed very little in all that time. It has survived all our planetary climatic changes and even survived the atomic bomb dropped at Hiroshima in the Second World War. This tree was the closest living organism to the epicentre of the bomb and although blown apart above the ground, sent shoots up after the war and now has a shrine dedicated to it at Hiroshima. It is a true survivor being very tough and untouched by any pests or diseases. Every part of the tree is used in Chinese folk medicine and it is gaining popularity in the West. Even without these attributes the Ginkgo makes a remarkable feature in any garden and is renowned for its spectacular yellow autumn colour. Often seen as a large tree in parks and gardens there are many varieties of Ginkgo biloba available. Some of these can easily be grown in a small garden. All are very well suited to container growing where they will live happily for many years with minimal attention and occasional feeding. We have several ten year old specimens thriving in pots. We graft our special Ginkgos onto onto seedlings of Ginkgo biloba, ready to thrive in your garden. Below is a list of the Ginkgos I currently grow. Some of these are available to buy online through my good friends at the Big Plant Nursery - a great place to buy super plants. I also grow a wide variety of other ornamental trees and shrubs. Don't forget my other specialism - click here for our lists of rare and hard to find Acers. *For trade enquiries click here |

| Ginkgo biloba Autumn Gold | Ultimately a large tree but not requiring too much space. An American form selected for its outstanding autumn colour. The butter yellow colour persists longer than most forms. Available as 2 year old plants in 3 litre pot size. | Click to order | |
| Ginkgo biloba Barabits Nana | A curious form of compact proportions making an irregular shrub. Although small growing this form has slightly larger classic shaped ginkgo leaves. An ideal selection for a small garden and perfectly suited to growing in containers. Available as 2 year old plants in 3 litre pot size. | Click to order | |
| Ginkgo biloba Chi-Chi | A Chinese form, shrubby rather than tree-like, this plant is highly regarded in China where, in time, it will produce breast-like protrusions from its trunk. Quite quick growing when young but will slow to become a knarled, curious shape. A classic piece of botanic history! Available as 2 year old plants in 3 litre pot size. | Click to order | |
| Ginkgo biloba Elsie | Our own selection of an upright growing, female plant found near to our nursery in Kent. This tree is isolated from any others and yet, in favourable years, sets sterile fruit without the aid of a pollinator. These fruits are highly prized in China for their medicinal and culinary values. But, be warned, the fruit has an odour described as rancid butter! Having said this the fruit is really quite ornamental, resembling small, yellow apricots on long, pendulous stems which persist on the tree long after the leaves have dropped. Available as 2 year old plants in 3 litre pot size. | ||
| Ginkgo biloba Fairmount |
An American selection producing a tall, fastigiated tree of great architectural value. Very suitable for a small garden as all the growth is upright and very narrow. This photograph demonstrates clearly its neat, upright habit. Available as 2 year old plants in 3 litre pot size. | Click to order | |
| Ginkgo biloba Horizontalis | As the name suggests the habit of this tree is remarkably flat growing and although it may be trained upright initially, in time this plant will resemble a huge umbrella. Marvellous in pots where it quickly assumes a strikingly shaped plant. Available as 2 year old plants in 3 litre pot size. | Click to order | |
| Ginkgo biloba Pendula | Similar to Horizontalis in its early stages but its growth is pendulous. It may also be trained in its early stages but is a fascinating plant if left to its own devices. Available as 2 year old plants in 3 litre pot size. | ||
| Ginkgo biloba Saratoga | Another American selection from the famous Saratoga Research Institute. This is a shrubby plant, the foliage is much narrower and resembles small, half open fans. Quite dense growing, overall an enchanting lacy outline in the landscape. Again very good in pots. Available as 2 year old plants in 3 litre pot size. | Click to order | |
| Ginkgo biloba Tremonia | A German selection, a fine fastigiated form with heavily textured blue-green foliage. This tree will make a narrow column, perfect for group planting and taking up very little space in a small garden. Available as 2 year old plants in 3 litre pot size. | Click to order | |
| Ginkgo biloba Troll | A lovely form, with compact bushy growth. Available as 2 year old plants in 3 litre pot size. | ||
| Ginkgo biloba Tubifolia | A fascinating shrubby tree with quite thin and twiggy growth. This forms two types of foliage, on mature wood the leaf is fused to resemble a small green trumpet while the younger wood produces a classic ginkgo leaf but with a more jagged outline. It could even be described as dissected. As the tree matures the majority of the foliage will be trumpet shaped. This is a highly sought after variety.
Available as 2 year old plants in 3 litre pot size. |

| Ginkgo biloba Umbrella | When we first grew this plant we assumed the name referred to the plants ultimate shape, but we now feel that the name refers to the leaf shape. It first appears as a two inch green spike which, as the season progresses, unfurls like an umbrella into a well proportioned fan-shaped leaf. The plant has a pleasing effect mid season with its fully opened leaves mixed with its unfurled umbrellas. Shrubby growth, a classic container plant.
